Collaborative resources

VILA is part of a larger network of collaborative partners. The collaborative resources at VILA's desposal, help with organizing events, manages lending of video/audio equipment for research purposes and much more.

Aims and areas of VILA

VILA aims to:

• To provide a visible platform to support the video research community at Aalborg University and further, connect and support research colleagues at national and international levels.
• To house and support several AAU research groups, including the Techno-Anthropology Video Lab, e-Learning Lab – Center for User Driven Innovation, Learning and Design, Mattering: A Centre for Discourse & Practice and Centre for Discourses in Transition and provide opportunities to connect with other groups working with video within and beyond Denmark.
• To host visitors working in this field to conduct seminars or workshops, to provide opportunities for external researchers to share their own video data and to search and research archived video data at AAU, provide training, and share best practices.

VILA has three focus areas:

• Support and training of advanced competencies using software aided data collection and analysis,
• Development of resources for mobile video data collection, and
• Establishing secure and safe video data storage and archives and related resources. 

DIGHUMLAB

DIGHUMLAB is a national consortium of four Danish universities: Aalborg University, Aarhus University, the University of Copenhagen and the University of Southern Denmark as well as the State and University Library and the National Library of Denmark and Copenhagen University Library. This consortium was created, to promote access to digital research resources, the development of research tools and education, strengthening ties to international Networks. VILA is a part of DigHumLab and we are located at Kroghsstræde 3 in Aalborg East, and Rendsburggade 14 in Aalborg Centre. 
 

VILA is now using a new program for booking equipment. The program is called Leihs and will make it much easier for you to view all available technical equipment at VILA, including where to collect (either Aalborg East, Kroghstræde 3 or CREATE in the centre of Aalborg), what you can use in combination and how long you wish to borrow the equipment. Below we have listed a how-to guide, that helps you set up a profile in Leihs!

Leihs guide

Follow the instructions below to enter the system:

• Step one: First time log-in, log in here using your AAU-mail (hum.aau.dk) and your personal AAU code. You need to contact us to have your user enabled. Contact us on this email: jdavidsen@hum.aau.dk
• SECOND-TIME LOG IN: use your AAU-mail (id.aau.dk) and personal code. Can only be used once user is enabled by VILA-administrator.

For booking:

• Step two: enter one of the categories (Audio, Batteries, Electronics, Light, etc.) and select VILA in the  “inventory pools”. Remember to deselect the others (ArT-Lab and MediaLab) as shown in the picture below.
• Step three: Select the devices you wish to borrow. You can also search in the list for specific devices.  NOTE: check the device-description to learn if the device is in Aalborg East or CREATE. The devices are, by default, in CREATE.
• Step four: Click “add” and then “Complete order”.
• Step five: Add your “Purpose” (e.g. scientific research AND institute) and “Submit order”, and your order is complete!
   

Pick-up info: equipment can be picked up at CREATE (Aalborg centre) or Kroghstræde 3, (Aalborg East) (by appointment).

We are constantly working on developing new videos and recordings to help researchers in their data collection and data processing - and we are available to answer questions posted on our channel. 

Hyphe is described as "a web corpus curation tool featuring a research-driven web crawler", which functions as a method to build illustrations of the web using HTML5 user interfaces. VILA has been given access to workshop videos from Aalborg University, held by Mathieu Jacomy, that are now available to you who is interested in learning more about HYPHE.

ELAN is a professional program for transcribing and annotating audio and video streams, which allows users to do complex annotations and transcriptions of observed data.

ELAN is a professional program for transcribing and annotating audio and video streams, which allows users to do complex annotations and transcriptions of observed data. The complexity of the program allows users to have multiple layers (tiers) of observation: e.g. one tier for speech, one for hand gestures, etc. Furthermore, the program allows for time-aligned annotations, which means that anything noted in the program can be coded to a specific time in the media file. The content produced in ELAN is always in Unicode and is always stored as XML files for easy access to the transcripts. The program allows users to associate up to four videos in a single document, which can all be active in the main window in each their own little resizable window.

Transana provides the ability to transcribe for qualitative researchers, who want to analyse text data, still images, and media-based data (audio/video). Transana allows its users to do professional transcripts - either independently or using the program's collaboration feature, which enables research colleagues to co-transcribe on a project in real time. In the program, data can be analysed in a variety of ways for different analytical purposes. Furthermore, the program allows for adding coding schemes, using keywords, collections or both. Transana will also allow users to explore different relationships in coded analytical data through text reports, graphical reports, and the search tool.

PluralEyes is a professional tool for synchronising video and audio from multiple cameras and other audio devices. The program will allow you to sync up to 10 different audio or video files (maximum 30 minutes of length) simultaneously and thus eliminating the need for clapboards, time code or manually syncing audio to video in post-production. In addition, PluralEyes is fully compatible with Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X and Final Cut Pro NLEs.

Adobe Creative cloud is a cluster of professional tools for all kinds of media editing purposes. The most important tool in VILA is Adobe Premiere Pro, which allows users to do professional video editing. The program can handle almost any video format available and has an enormous amount of editing options, which enables users to create beautiful presentations of video data. Whether it is cropping, merging or any other type of video editing - Adobe Premiere Pro is there to help you. Premiere is available through VILAs video lab at Kroghstræde 3 and otherwise available by download with student discount.

DOTE is a new type of transcription software developed by the BigSoftVideo team. It is tailored for transcribing social conduct, conversation and multimodal interaction for research purposes. DOTE has been designed to support two specific standards of transcription for qualitative research, which are commonly used in conversation analysis, for example. DOTE has some of the features commonly found in other software - such as video playback, a timeline and a visual waveform, synced playback - but these features are streamlined and easier to use in DOTE. Moreover, it has enhanced features that do not exist in any legacy software so far, including transcript parsing, smart auto-completion, transcript heuristics, 360 video support, video-cues, export to publishable document (and subtitles) and version control. There are many more features and enhancements planned for the future. Their motto is make transcription fun again!

There are many sources of information about GDPR and informed consent, but it can be challenging to figure out what information is relevant for your research project. It is of high importance to consult the information regarding GDPR at your local institution - as specific rules and circumstances may apply. To make it more tangible for you, we have found a few examples of how to follow the GDPR regulations when developing a form for informed consent when collecting audio-visual data. If you feel most comfortable using a template, both Aarhus University (AU) and Aalborg University have examples that you can follow. AU has developed both a standard and an extended consent template:

Embarking on what sometimes seems like a never-ending literature search can be very timeconsuming - which is why we have done it for you. Below you will find a (not exhaustive) list of relevant literature when collecting video data.

ELAN (Eudico Linguistic Annotator) enables you to create annotations and transcriptions of your data, and thereby helps you analyse different types of media. Click here to access the course: ELAN.

Transana is a transcribing program which enables you to transcribe and code your data. Using shortcuts like CTRL+A, you can play the video, making the process easier and less timeconsuming. Access the course here: Transana. 

The aim of the course on 360 video data is to provide you with knowledge about how to utilize some of the latest methods of capturing video. A specific focus will be given to 360° cameras, as we believe that they present new, interesting possibilities in regards to qualitative video data collection that you should be aware of when planning your qualitative study using video cameras.
